The Marche region is situated halfway down the Italian peninsula on the Adriatic Sea. Renowned for its fresh seafood, soups, and crudo (Italian sushi), the region captures 12 DOC's. Verdicchio, the heavily exported white, is from three areas: Castelli dei Jesi (grown near the Esino River), Matellica (grown inland from Jesi on the mountain basin), and Serratrama. Rare indigenous whites include Maceratino, Bianchello del Metauro (made from Biancone grapes), and Falerio dei Colli Ascolani (made from Trebbiano grapes). The most well known reds-Rosso Piceno and Rosso Conero-are produced from Montepulciano grapes, a Sangiovese varietal, and native varietals like Lacrima. International varietals include Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot. Back to Regions
