With widely varied terrain that encompasses plains, hills, mountains, and the rugged Valtellina area, Lombardia has 16 DOC's, two of which are DOCG. Highlights include wines from Lugana near Lake Garda; the Oltepo Pavese area; the Valcalepio near Bergamo; and Valtellina, which produces some of the most Il Calepino Wine Cellarinteresting red wines from a Nebbiolo grape varietal dubbed "Chinvennaska" in local dialect. The strongest reds include Inferno ("hell") and Sforzato ("forced") made from dry aged grapes similar to the Veneto's Amarone. The region also employs the Champenoise method-considered the highest-quality method in Italy-when the second fermentation of the wine is done in the bottle. Finally, one cannot leave the region without a taste of the rare Moscato di Scansano.

TASTE: This red from the region of Lombardia combines the knowledge of the 14th century monk, Friar Calepinus, and the skilled winemaking style of FM Plebani. A blend of 50% Cabernet and 50%Merlot, this jammy red shows bright raspberry fruit, medium body, and a spicy finish. Set to compliment any meal, from beginning to end, pizzas and red pasta sauces will bring out its best.

TASTE: From a single vineyard of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot along the Olio River, this red blends equal portions of the two grapes, and ages them 30% in barrique barrels and 70% in 225 liter casks to produce a rich wine loaded with dark berry fruit, full body, hints of earth, and a long spicy finish. This is a wine designed to complement strong dishes consisting of roasts, game, risotto, and meat based pastas.

COLOR: Light Cherry Red

TASTE: From the shores of Lake Garda comes this classy single vineyard Rose`, "Sicli". Described in literature as the "one night wine" because the juice of the red grapes is left to ferment with the skins for just a few hours lending the enlivening cherry-pink hue. The beautiful color, complemented by a flowery nose with citrus aromas and the essence of cranberries, reflects the fresh taste and salty tone leading an almond infused finish. Excellent with cold cuts and white meats, appetizers, salads, soft cheese and seafood.

REGION: Lombardia

COLOR: Ruby Red With Orange Reflections

TASTE: From the grape "Chiavennasca" in Lombardia, also known as "Nebbiolo" in Piemonte, comes a unique red. The blackberry fruit in the front is followed by a series of flavors including smoke, black pepper, and oak. This is the last D.O.C. wine that you encounter before crossing the border to Switzerland. Traditionally paired with polenta, marbled cheeses, and rich roasts like "brasato," which requires the meat to soak in the wine for a day before cooking.

COLOR: Deep Ruby Red

TASTE: In this most Northern part of the region the nebbiolo grapes are allowed to dry for a few weeks before being crushed. This gives the wine concentrated dark berries and prune flavors, medium body, and earthy finish. The terraced vineyards are unique in the world because of the steepness in which they scale the Pre-Alps. A great wine to compliment risotto in gorgonzola sauce, all ripe cheeses, and full flavored meats.
