Basilicata

BasilicataBasilicata is one of Italy's most under populated regions due to its extremely mountainous terrain, a lack of agriculturally viable land, and desert-like areas in the central and eastern sections. The two short coastlines lie on the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west and the Ionian Sea to east. One jewel of viticulture in the north is defined by the extinct volcano Monte Vulture (4300ft/2005mt), which is covered with vines and chestnut groves at its midrange altitude. Basilicata is home to the Aglianico grape varietals, whose origin is still in dispute. The powerful red grape, with small berry clusters and a thick skin, is thought to have been brought to the Italian peninsula by the Greeks; others believe it is an Italian wild vine that was domesticated by native tribes in the Bronze Age. In any case, the synergy of land and vine come together here in perfect harmony. The altitude, the potassium-rich soil, temperature variations, and exceptional drainage capabilities complement the late-ripening varietals and allow it to reach its full potential. Since most viticulture in this region is family oriented, private winemaking makes up a large portion of the region and is controlled by a handful of noteworthy producers.Back to Regions

Terre Degli Svevi

White Wine:

Terre Degli SveviGRAPE: 70% Muller Thurgau and 30% Traminer

REGION: Basilicata

COLOR: Light yellow with green reflections

TASTE: From an area customarily famed for its red wines, this white is an innovative break from former traditions. Perfectly matured grapes are fermented in stainless steel vats creating a concentrated refreshing white, interlaced with complex tropical fruit flavors including mango, candied pineapple & honey, with an intense, Traminer derived, aromatic bouquet. Excellent with all seafood, including crudo (raw fish), and mature cheeses.

Red Wine:

Terre Degli SveviGRAPE: Aglianico

REGION: Basilicata

COLOR: Ruby Red

TASTE: No respectable meal could do without a fine bottle of wine and, in Basilicata, only one wine has the DOC stamp indicating it’s high quality and status, Aglianico. Produced in the area surrounding Monte Vulture, an extinct volcano that dates back to antiquity, the rich soil bestows characteristics, in taste, so rare that they are highly prized. Dark berry fruit lingers behind a vinous nose and couples with a harmonious dry taste, which is rightfully tannic and, tends to soften and become velvety with age. It is a wine that goes well with poultry, roasted meats, wild game and grilled sausage.

Terre Degli SveviGRAPE: Aglianico del Vulture

REGION: Basilicata

COLOR: Deep ruby

TASTE:In Basilicata, only one wine has the DOC stamp indicating it's high quality and status, Aglianico del Vulture (known in antiquity as Ellenico). This single vineyard red, aged 12 months in French Allier barriques, is full and complex with bright cherry fruit, notes of vanilla and traces of thyme. This powerful and distinctive red is excellent with roasted red meats, game and ripe cheeses.
